The week has come and it has gone that was known as GDC (Game Developers Conference) filled with a lot of good news including info on the latest Unreal Engine 3 and Gears of War 3, but what we didn't hear much about was what those Naughty Dogs over at Naughty Dog have been up to until today. At GDC, Naughty Dog was in fact there showing off their upcoming game in 3D. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but this is easily my most anticipated game of 2011 on ANY console. Ask any that know me, and they'll laugh when you mention my name and Uncharted in the same sentence. But, not only my most anticipated game of the year, but the most anticipated game for all gamers on the PlayStation 3. Unless you've been living in a cave this many years. With this demo at GDC, Naughty Dog have reveled the villainess of the next installment in the Uncharted franchise, and her, yes, its a female this time and her name is Katherine Marlow. A head of a 400-year-old cabal associated with Queen Elizabeth and Sir Francis Drake, Nathan Drakes distant relative.
This clip absolutely blows my mind. Its display of how the Uncharted Engine has grown and can clearly be seen in the games lighting, facial detail and all around rendering of the games graphics. Even in the tread of the tire of the car. It really also peaks my curiosity of games storyline. We've never seen Drake so well dressed for anything along with his good time old friend Victor "Sully" Sullivan. It really makes you wonder what they were up to before this event, and also gives you a good idea of the globe trotting you can expect in this game, that to me seems as though it will blow its predecessor out of the water. Here we are what seems to be in England, then you're in some chateau in the jungle, in the desert and here. What are these to up to. Sully clearly knows this woman well, as does Drake. Perhaps they'd worked with her before.
It also mentioned, according to Joystiq.com, that Uncharted 3's use of 3D technology may not have everyone rushing out to get a 3DTV, but that the game still manages to run flawlessly with a steady frame-rate even in 3D. This is especially important as Naughty Dog Co-President Evan Wells had stated that the demanding nature of the 3D required the team to think things a little differently. As a result, those who will be playing the game in 2D can expect extra performance or improved performance in 2D than the other two games in the trilogy. That's awesome news to hear! And I don't think its just business talk as Naughty Dog are passionate about their development of theirs games and pushing and delivering on their promises.
Regardless of the source wherever it may be, it seems that many who've experienced Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception in 3D, have all said the same. It performs well and works great, but doesn't necessarily have the 'poor man' rushing out digging himself deep into debt to have this new tech. It seems we're still a people waiting for 3D to get even cheaper, though we're adopting and excepting the idea with open minds, and that could help the industry to continue to improve and 'whoa' us in this type of home entertainment.
Never-the-less, this is great news and a great look at what we can expect. Uncharted has remained clinched tightly to its roots in displaying amazing story-telling techniques and maintaining that cinematic feel. It drives me insane knowing how long I have to wait to get my hands on this masterpiece but, it won't be too much longer. Expect it on store shelves 11 November 2011 and check back for more updated news on Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception and all other gaming news here in the X-Gaming Zone.
