I'm pretty sure those aren't tape stains, but are in fact the rements of the actual tape. Over the last 60+ years they've merged with the card to the point that the two are now one and the same. It's a pretty common ocurrance with these 52's. Upton, like a large number of the players featured in this set, didn't have much of a major league career. A likely by product of being a start up struggling to get contracts. Struggle that is for Topps, not Upton, though he apparently struggled to find a contract after the '51 season as well.
